Preschool phonics is sound-play, not letter drills — rhyming, initial sounds, and sound games build the awareness reading later stands on. Ten minutes of daily play covers it.

Phonics at preschool age means one thing: playing with sounds until the child hears that words are made of them. Letters come later and easier when this foundation exists.

Initial sound "I spy"

"I spy something that starts with 'mmm'" — sound-based, not letter-name-based.

Rhyme detection and generation

"Do 'nose' and 'toes' rhyme? What rhymes with 'cat'?" — silly invented words count double.

Sound of the day

One sound hunted through the day: "sss" found in sun, susu, samosa, bus.

Clapping syllables

Names and words clapped in beats: "Aa-rav" (2), "pa-pa-ya" (3).

Robot talk (blending)

Adult says "c...a...t" robot-style; child blends to "cat!" — the core reading operation, as a game.

Sound sorting baskets

Objects sorted by starting sound into two katoris.

Rhyming antakshari

The family game, adapted: rhyme chains instead of songs.

Alliteration silliness

"Silly Sana sips soup slowly" — tongue-twisters tuned to their name.

Environmental sound games

"What sound does the cooker make? The auto?" — sound attention generally feeds speech-sound attention.

Name-sound ownership

Their own name's first sound, spotted everywhere: the highest-motivation phonics content that exists.

The bilingual layer

Sound play works in every language — Hindi rhymes, syllable-clapping Hindi names, sound-spotting in both. Phonological awareness built in one language transfers to others; play in whichever language flows.

What to skip at this age

Letter worksheets, flashcard drills, and "reading programs" for three-year-olds. If a child spontaneously loves letters, follow the interest lightly; if not, sound-play is the entire appropriate program, and children arriving at five with strong sound awareness learn letters startlingly fast.

Ten minutes, embedded

None of this needs sessions: the school walk, the bath, the dal-cooking wait — sound games slot into transit and waiting time. Consistency across months beats intensity in any week.
