All About Dusshera

Dussehera, also known as Vijayadashami, is an ancient Hindu festival and is celebrated with enthusiasm all across the country in different ways.

There are two stories around which Dusshera is centered. One of them is rooted in the epic Ramayana and tells the story of Lord Ram, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, and his journey to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. The tenth day of the war between Lord Ram and Ravana, known as Dussehera, is when Ram defeated Ravana. The battle is considered to be a culmination of Lord Ram's unwavering dedication to righteousness and his determination to uphold dharma, the moral order of the universe.

Another reason why Dussehera is celebrated is that it commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. According to Hindu mythology, Mahishasura was a powerful demon who had gained immortality through a boon from Lord Brahma. With his newfound invincibility, Mahishasura wreaked havoc on the earth, tormenting and oppressing both humans and gods. In their desperation, the gods turned to the divine feminine energy, known as Shakti, who manifested herself as Goddess Durga. With her unparalleled strength and determination, Goddess Durga waged a fierce battle against Mahishasura for nine days and nights, ultimately defeating him on the tenth day, which is celebrated as Dussehera.

Ultimately, Dusshera signifies the victory of good over evil. The stories of Lord Ram and Goddess Durga are a great way to teach children about the importance of treading the right path and not harming anyone. These days, apart from a number of great books on Dusshera, there are also a number of workshops and events that include storytelling and plays enacting the significance of Dusshera. Environmentally friendly effigies of Ravana are burned and children are also taught how to make sweets like laddoos and sandesh.

Let's take a look at some of the unique and interesting activities that you can do with your children this Dusshera.
